It means “Red People”.
It is also known by its nickname, The Sooner State.
The state was formed from Indian Territory on November 16, 1907.
It was the 46th state to become part of the United States.

日本では一般的に、子供の方が大人より第二言語を学ぶのが速いと言われています。これは、当たり前の事実として誰もが信じています。

しかし、アメリカで行われた研究によると、8歳、10歳、14歳、成人がある同じ方法でロシア語を学んだ場合、成人が最も上達が早かったということです。

ここで興味がわくのは、一体どのような方法で学べは子供より早く第二言語を学べるのかということです。

そこで役立つのが、他国に移民した家族の話です。

例えば、アメリカに移民した家族の場合、子供は学校に通います。恐らく、学校の授業はほとんど何のことか分からないはずです。

しかし、遊びになると話しは違います。”Throw me the ball.”” Come here.”などとアメリカ人の子供に言われ、はじめは何のことか全く分からないと思いますが、周りの子供を見ていればなんとなく意味は分かってくるはずです。そして、最終的には言われたことに対して行動を起こせるようになります。

しかし大人は、近所の人たちと”It is very fine today.””Yes, it is.”など、全く行動が伴わない会話ばかりしています。

ここまで話せば、もうお分かりだと思います。

言語を学ぶには、視覚と体の動きが非常に大切になってくるのです。そして、このように視覚と体の動きを利用した学習法をTPR（Total Physical Response）と言います。

ここで、われわれが行ってきた英語の学習法を思い出してみてください。例えば、”stand up”というイディオムを学ぶ場合、日本語で”立つ”と暗記します。

しかし、TPRの場合は、まず先生が実際に”Stand up”と言って立ち上がります。そして、その行動を見た生徒は、先生と同じように立ち上がります。このように見て体を動かすことで、脳に新しい言葉の神経回路を作ることができるのです。

そして、TPRには、３つの特徴があります。

1．記憶が長い　2．上達が早い　3．かたまりで覚える（単語ごとではなく文で）

われわれの英語の学習法は、日本語の神経回路を使って英語を身につけようとします。しかし、TPRは、子供が母国語を学ぶように視覚と体の動きを使います。

もちろん、TPRは全能ではありません。しかし、小学校や中学校で使えば、6年以上も英語を勉強して全く使えないということは避けられるのではないでしょうか。
